The University of Memphis Represented at the Society for Applied Anthropology Conference for Undergraduate and Graduate Student Research

The Department of Anthropology to Present Research on Formerly Incarcerated Individuals and Care

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — February 4, 2024 — The University of Memphis Department of Anthropology will be represented at the annual Society for Applied Anthropology (SFAA) conference for their work with formerly incarcerated individuals and how they are affected by different modes of care as it pertains to societal reintroduction.

The research team is led by Drs. William Robertson and Lindsey Feldman, who are assistant professors within the Department of Anthropology. The two are leading a team consisting of two graduate students and three undergraduate students: Quinn Houlihan, Emily Sheppard, Alex Blevins, Caydie Lent and Macy Clanton, respectively. The research project is done in collaboration with the Haven, a Memphis-center ran by the Friends For All Corporation, that focuses on promoting physical, mental and emotional well-being and care for individuals in need of support or affected by stigma in the Memphis community.

The SFAA team, led by accelerated Bachelors to Masters (ABM) undergraduate student Alex Blevins and graduate student Emily Sheppard, will be traveling to Santa Fe, New Mexico at the end of March to present their study to contribute to anthropological discussions and national recognition about the reentry of formerly incarcerated individuals into society and the care that is necessary to aid them. The team is a cross-departmental collaborative with the Department of Anthropology, alongside two students in the School of Public Health, offering a robust perspective in the research area.

“Collaborating on both a quantitative and qualitative approach, we apply our interview transcriptions, anthropological literature, program observation, and acquired knowledge with methods of care in Memphis, TN to analyze how care disparities affect those seeking reentry after incarceration,” says Alex Blevins.

SFAA, founded in 1941, promotes the continuous investigation of human behavior and how it applies to contemporary issues and problems of society as we know it. The SFAA represents professionals and pre-professionals from many sectors of anthropological research, including but not limited to: academia, business, law, public health, medicine, environment and government.

From their website, SFAA states that, “The unifying factor is a commitment to making an impact on the quality of life in the world.”
